Signs to boost Fraser Island tourist safety
Last Update: Tuesday, February 1, 2005. 2:31pm (AEDT)
The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service will add extra signs and information for walkers on Fraser Island by the end of the month.
It has reviewed the signs in the Lake Wabby area after an inquest into the death of British tourist David Eason.
District manager Rob Allan says the new signs will alert visitors who have strayed from the track, as well as providing safety checks and orientation.
Mr Allan says parks and wildlife has also made orientation and preparation for the newly opened Great Walk on Fraser Island very clear for visitors.
"We have things like meeting points, recommended emergency equipment that people should take, bookings for the Great Walk so we know where they are to evacuate people in the case of fire, and a very comprehensive signage plan so as they walk along 90 odd kilometres of Great Walk there's constant reminders of totems along the way so they know exactly where they are and how far it is to the next place on Fraser Island," he said.
